The History of Canning Town Football Club

History of Canning Town F.C. established 1948 Canning Town Football Club was established in 1948 by Eric Keylock who, after being demobbed from the Royal Air Force, decided to form his own football team after persuading his company, Coordinated Traffic Services in Silvertown, to provide a set of shirts. In the early fifties, Co-ordinated Traffic officially became Canning Town Football Club, quickly winning promotion in 52/53 from the Essex & London Border League Division 3 as runners-up and promotion the following season as runners-up in the 2nd Division. In the mid-fifties, a second and third team were added and the honours came thick and fast, and by the late part of the decade, the club became successful at various standards of amateur football. During the seventies, Town were fielding four strong sides in the South East and South West Essex Leagues plus a Sunday side and a re-formed youth team. During the eighties Town suffered a barren time, winning just two trophies throughout the decade. However, as with all unsuccessful periods in Canning Town’s history, the club retained its members, and ensured that a vibrant social life flourished. The 1990’s brought lots of changes in terms of player and management personnel. An influx of youngsters saw Town’s First XI win all five competitions entered in their first season; it earmarked the start of the club’s most successful period. Promotion to the Essex Business House Senior Intermediate Division followed, with the team playing some amazing football. In 96/97, the First XI won both the Essex and London County Intermediate Cups, an amazing feat! In 97/98 Town won the Essex Business House Senior Intermediate Division Title after winning their last consecutive 10 games - quite an achievement by any standards! The 2000/01 season saw Town’s First and Reserve XI’s move from the Essex Business House League to the Essex Olympian Football League. Both teams won their respective divisions and gained promotion; a great achievement for their first season in a new league. More recently, the First XI managed to reach the final of the 2007/08 Anagram Records Trophy Final (Capital Counties FLT) for the first time, and despite a fantastic effort they were beaten by a single goal. The year 2008 marked the 60th anniversary of Canning Town Football Club, which was celebrated in magnificent style at an end of season anniversary dinner and presentation evening. At present, Town field four sides every Saturday, with the First and Reserve XI playing in their respective top divisions of the Essex Olympian League. The 3rd and 4th XI compete in the Romford and District league, and are the gateway sides that nurture the newcomers and youngsters that go on to feed the First and Reserve squads. Town also field a Sunday Vets side , players ranging between 35-60 years of age to compete in friendlies against old time teams.
